Speech and Language Therapy in Austria

Overall description / Legal basis

The initial legislation for SLT was passed in 1961, including the title "Diplomierte Logopaedin / Diplomierter Logopaede", abrev. DL.

The present legal basis for training and professional practice was passed 1996  (BGBl 1996/327). It permits SLTs to provide service to all age groups. The new job title is "Logopädin/Logopäde".

Organisation of SLT in the country

Most of the SLT´s are working in private practice. Nearly a quarter of SLT´s are employed at various centres (hospitals, rehabilitation centres, special needs centres, etc.).

Education / training  (BA/MA/PG)

At the moment there are two possibilities to attend initial education:

a.  Akademie für den logopädisch-phoniatrisch-audiologischen Dienst (Academy)
The student receives a „Diploma“ after 3-years of post secondary education at an accredited Academy of Logopedics.

b.  Fachhochschule Logopädie (University of Applied Science)
After a 3-year study students graduate as “Bachelor” and in the future they will have the opportunity to reach the Master-level.

Authorisation / license / recognition of diploma

The Austrian diploma/BA is sufficient for employment.
SLTs who go into private practice have to register at their local government office.

Recognition of professional qualifications obtained abroad

EU – SLTs need to contact the Ministry concerned (BM für Soziale Sicherheit und Generationen) about which documents are required.

Non-EU citizens need to contact the same Ministry (see above).
Additional training may be required.

Status of the profession and the professional + income/salary

Income: dependant on contract(s) with health insurance(s) or arrangements with client (private practice)

Salary: normal rates for educational level and years of employment.
