A multilingual and multicultural Europe

A challenge for speech and language therapists

Congress objectives:

  • To focus on the practice of speech and language therapy in an increasingly multicultural and multilingual Europe
  • To share and to debate new approaches and developing practice across all groups of disorders and service settings

Multilingualism and multicultural aspects influence our daily lives. Therefore the speech and language therapist needs to acknowledge all types of practice within his/her area of work.

The theme was deliberately chosen as a new challenge speech and language therapists must confront. As Europe grows larger, the population needing Speech and Language Therapy in their mother tongue or maybe in a common language shared with the therapist will grow.

So we need to reflect on the developing role of speech and language therapists. There are at present only a limited number of studies concerning multiculturalism and multilingualism.
